Dental implants are the best solution for replacing teeth that have been lost. Sadly, for many people the cost of dental implants in the US and Canada is so high that they are out of reach. Fortunately, in Guatemala they are affordable.
Dental implants offer several advantages that make them virtually ideal. They look just like natural teeth. They are extremely stable (not moving or suffering from misalignment). They are strong and able to chew any type of food, allowing you to eat normally. They are resistant and will probably last for life. Dental implants look and feel like regular teeth. Finally, they require minimal maintenance and you will only need to follow your usual dental hygiene and yearly dental visits.
Dental implants involve a more lengthy process than other restorations, but the results make it worth it. In the first visit, after the dentist approves the procedure, the patient is prepared with local anesthesia. The dentist then inserts the implant into the jawbone below where the tooth was lost. An implant is about the length of the tooth and root it is replacing.
In rare cases, sedation is used to relax an anxious patient. The surgery takes one or two days of recovery and the stitches are left in place. Some dentists now use surgical guides which increase accuracy and reduce the need for stitches. Ask your dentist if they are using surgical guides.
Afterward the surgery and recovery, an international patient returns home and waits for the implant to fuse with the bone, a process called osseointegration. Osseointegration takes place over a period of 3 to 6 months. This process is what gives the implant the strength and stability of a natural tooth.
When the patient returns to the clinic, the dentist places an abutment on top of the implant. (The abutment might be placed during the first visit if the conditions allow it.) The dentist then places a crown on top of the abutment.
In some cases, a temporary restoration is placed while the patient waits for osseointegration to take place.
